Emilio Alonso Espasandín, born in A Coruña in 1989, is a standout Galician clarinetist celebrated for his versatile career. Currently recognized as a prominent figure in orchestral, solo, chamber, and educational music spheres.
Initiating his studies under Jesús López, Emilio achieved high honors in his Bachelor’s degree at CSM de A Coruña before pursuing a Master’s at ESMAE in Porto under Prof. António Saiote. Concurrently, he refined his skills with mentors like Beatriz López, Juan
Ferrer, and received guidance from notable figures including Arno Piters, Eric Hoeprich (historical clarinet), Wenzel Fuchs or Andrew Marriner, among others.
Winner of 1st Prizes at Paideia Foundation’s 2011 Musical Excellence Prizes and the 2012 José Valcárcel Competition, Emilio shifted his focus to international clarinet competitions, earning accolades such as 3rd Prize in Czech Clarinet Art (2014), 2nd Prize in the Bal y
Gay International Competition (2017), and Finalist in Jeunesses Musicales Belgrade (2012).
Emilio has showcased his solo prowess performing concertos by Mozart, Weber, Françaix, and Nielsen with esteemed ensembles such as Camerata Serbica, Orchestre National de Cannes, Real Filharmonía de Galicia, and Orquesta Gaos.
Immersed in orchestral engagements for over a decade, Emilio served as Principal Clarinet with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid and the Orquesta de Euskadi. Renowned as a E-flat clarinet player, he collaborates regularly with orchestras like National de Lille, Opéra de Toulon, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Sinfónica de RTVE, Sinfónica de Galicia, and Real Filharmonía de Galicia, where he held the position of Co-Principal Clarinet (2014-15).
Currently, he holds a Solo position with the Orchestre National de Cannes since 2019. An active chamber musician, Emilio is notably associated with pianist Gabriel López, with whom he recorded his debut CD in 2012, featuring 20th-century repertoire.
In the realm of education, Emilio is frequently invited to conduct courses and masterclasses. He also serves as a Guest Professor at the Escuela de Altos Estudios Musicales de Galicia (EAEM).
